Nostalgia: Figures in the Landscape
When you put a figure in the landscape, human or animal, or both, then strange things happen; there is time, story, a rendering of consciousness. 'Nostalgia' is sometimes a word that is used lightly, or pejoratively, but it shouldn't be. Referring to the 'pain of longing for home', it is one of the most powerful emotions we experience. 'Home' may mean many things, but it can be more about emotion and imagination than any particular place. In these landscape paintings, it might denote the past, childhood, or a simple relationship with the natural world that - as if it were lost - we are always seeking. Of course, we can only rediscover our Eden if we look after the earth, its ecology and its creatures.
