'Ocean, Island, Shore' Art Exhibition: Summer/Autumn 2021
This was the catalogue for the 'Ocean, Island, Shore' exhibition at Blue Stone Cottage Studio Gallery during last summer-autumn. Some of these works are still available.
These paintings are inspired by the wild coastlines which border the Bass Strait and Southern Ocean, from the dramatic rim flanked by the Great Ocean Road, to the beauty of Bruny and the rock-strewn shores of King Island. They begin with walking coastal tracks, taking mental and photographic notes, and absorbing impressions. They emerge on the canvas as poems in paint, reflective compositions on the distinctive character of these magnetic places.
These artworks draw upon the visual richness and complexity of such littoral environments, giving prominence to the fragile wildflowers and wind-sculpted plants that cling to cliff edges, thriving in an onslaught of salt air, cool mist and sea-spray. They foreground the intricate, understated beauty of small stones, layered rock and coastal heath, but also embrace the epic expanses visible at the land's edge.
They are imbued with the excitement and dynamism that raises our spirits in the vicinity of the ocean. With rapt observation and joy in the possibilities of paint to record the splendour of the natural world, the artist celebrates those alluring borders between land and sea.
These works are a continuation of the coastal series successfully exhibited at Metropolis Gallery in Geelong in recent years. That gallery has now, unfortunately, closed, but Blue Stone Cottage Studio Gallery will host this evolving series from now on.
